New Teen Trend: Eyeball Licking

Published: July 9th, 2013

I consider myself a teen expert. I'm thinking, though, of calling myself "the teen trend guru" because I find myself fascinated by the teen trends. Over the years the teen trends just keep getting more and more creative. I've kept you informed about the elusive "thigh gap", "gallon-smashing" and even "doll face."

Today, I am going to inform you about a teen trend that is taking off in Japan that even shocked me. So have a seat and listen up.

Apparently, teens in Japan are expressing their affection and maybe even love and lust by engaging in "eyeball-licking" also known somewhat appropriately and informally as "worming."

Here's the plan:

1. Teen 1 sticks out tongue and starts licking the eyeball of teen 2.

2. Teen 2 may squeal in delight while risking eye problems.

OK, so the videos are all over YouTube, so what are the odds our teens are doing it here? Doesn't take much for trends to go global. We talked to Harry Lebowitz, MD, an opthalmologist in Pennsylvania. While he hasn't treated any eye-lickees personally, he says, "It certaintly has a weird slant that seems to attract individuals in their young 20s. But from a sensual standpoint, it is very uncomfortable. The cornea has more nerves per square millimeter. If a small abrasion occurs, the person will need to receive treatment; it doesn't heal on its own."

But the risks don't stop there.

"There are certain types of infections that can cause pink eye... You can also contract sexually transmitted diseases through the eye, like chlamydia, which can lead to blindness."

As if that were not enough, the ridges in the tongue may cause corneal abrasions.

Listen, we have got to keep an eye on our teens and yes this pun is intended. Teens love to try out new activities as we know. You just may want to talk to your teen about this trend because it is not just silly fun, but may lead to problems. And, I can't resist saying this so please forgive me: Don't worry about opening up a can of worms.
